Centuries ago, we had the understanding that all objects fell at different speeds according to their weight. Galileo changed that. After him came Newton to describe gravity even more precisely. Newtonian physics was all that was necessary until about 100 years ago. It took an Einstein to solve astronomical problems with his General Relativity.
