Concussion
Remember To Send for Help – Call an Ambulance
Signs & Symptoms of Concussion
- Loss of consciousness
- Confusion and disorientation / poor concentration
- Memory loss / amnesia
- Fatigue and tiredness / headaches / visual problems
Treatment
Conscious Patient
- DRSABCD
- If the patient shows signs of concussion they must seek medical assistance
Unconscious Patient
- If the patient has suffered a blow to the head it is possible there may be a spinal injury
- Check for a response
- If breathing normally, carefully place them into the recovery position (try and keep the head and neck in neutral alignment)
- Monitor the patient’s breathing
- If breathing stops start CPR
- If the patient is bleeding from the head arrest the flow using minimal direct pressure
- If fluid flows out of the ears cover with a sterile dressing
