Part 2 Tale of Jim

“If I brought you to another planet, on which nothing made sense, and told you it was normal, would you believe me?

Obviously, you would not. But if I let you here and say the same thing to your children, and their children, and then theirs, would they believe me one day? Most likely, and if I stopped you from telling them the truth, it would certainly happen. But then, even after all that, is no one going to doubt it? That is probably not the case. The doubt and uncertainty of humans is the reason we try to understand even a little of the world around us, and if we cannot explain it in any way, we know there's something else we don't know, and we try to understand it. It is inevitable.”

Chapter 1, Story Preview

--Jim--

There he is; Jim, someone from the seventh generation living there, sleeping in his Hammack in his garden, hit by the soft artificial wind. He is the only person to have doubts on the place he lives in since the third generation. It was long, but finally something interesting happened to cure me of my ennui. I almost feel like God looking at Jesus... He has always been pretty curious, asking where the “Sun” comes from and why it seems like they live on the surface in a sphere, as it did not make sense to him. He asks all kinds of questions, ever since he was five, and even now, twenty years later. Among the population of two hundred thousand individuals from one to eighty years old, he is the only one to ask such questions. That is why he is so important for some and so dangerous for others. This planet, if we can call it a planet, is about half the size of the Earth, and has only four governments, supposedly all democratic and never at war. They were so close and friendly in public that the people have always wondered why it couldn’t be just one country. In fact, Jim had seen them four, as anyone could do by contacting them, and asked them this question; “Why are you not one big government even though you are all friends and made the same laws?” to which they replied,

“If one of us becomes corrupt or die, the others will choose someone else to take their place, but otherwise, it would be more difficult.” Jim clearly did not expect that answer, and when he asked more questions regarding that, they refused to answer, saying that this was a secret and leading him out of their office. Thus, he left confused, but thought that it must have been a good reason and, since it could be something to keep the peace, didn’t try to get any more information regarding that. Even though he gave up on this, he still thinks about it sometimes, even yesterday. He also finds it odd that no one else doubts anything as much as he does, especially since those things do not always seem natural or normal, such as the complete peace and the open borders between every nation. This is very natural for this place, but he still felt that weird,

and not quite natural. Perhaps he already understood the basics of human behavior. Certainly, he understands it better than those who created this planet. They did not understand that you cannot stop curiosity. They were able to restrict everyone, but someone finally understand that these things were not logical. After all, many things were not given any explanation. Where did the sun or wind come from? How did life appear? Such questions could not be answered by those in control, not even by making believable lies. Finally, he wakes. There he lays for a moment, before getting up and, yet again, wanting to do something the government did not expect; going to this place’s version of Antarctica.
