The events of the book are set in Hong Kong during the Vietnam War. The author was a government engineer and became involved in the corruption common at that time. The book describes the expatriate life and relations with the local Chinese population. It finishes with the author having to leave the Colony when he undertakes a solo yacht journey to finish abruptly in Australia.
